Overview

This session is designed to ensure therapists will be able to walk away with a variety of ways to use common objects to target a wide variety of communication skills, whether in the school, private practice, or clinic setting. New and veteran SLPs will benefit from this session. Many SLPs working with school-aged children do not realize the amount of therapy activities that can be designed around materials the already have. The Presenter will choose a variety of items commonly found in therapy rooms (such as post-it notes, paper clips, etc.), and systematically address practical ways to use each one to target different areas of communication (articulation, language, and pragmatics). Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with others in the session to brainstorm additional ways to use the items. Participants will also have an opportunity to create activities for their caseload using materials mentioned in the presentation. All the suggested therapy ideas will be direct, evidence-based, related to common core, interactive, hands on, and engaging. Participants will walk away with practical therapy ideas they can use the very next day. They will have suggested activities for targeting all areas of communication. They will also have the framework necessary to design their own ideas using the objects discussed. Participants will have an understanding of the importance of providing engaging, evidence-based, and hands on activities with school-aged children.
