Overview

With the vastly changing population on Long Island comes the need for Speech-Language Pathologists to understand the growing English Language Learner (ELL) population. The workshop will briefly discuss research on second language acquisition. We will also discuss the stages of second language acquisition and therapeutic strategies and linguistic areas of focus for each stage, as well as Basic Interpersonal Communication skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) and their significance in the school environment. New York State regulations and English as a New Language (ENL) strategies will be presented so that attendees can utilize these strategies in their therapy settings.

Presenters

Michelle Ramirez M.S. CCC-SLP, is a bilingual (Spanish speaking) speech-language pathologist. She has worked  with children and adults ranging from ages birth-25 within the school, home, and clinical settings in New York City and Nassau County. Michelle has mostly served culturally and linguistically diverse students in these settings. She  completed her undergraduate studies at New York University and completed her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and Bilingual Extension from Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus. Michelle's background and experience has led her to become skilled in the areas of bilingualism and supporting English Language Learners in the schools. She has also given presentations to fellow faculty members pertaining to bilingualism and serving English Language Learners in the schools. In addition, Michelle has facilitated parent trainings in English and Spanish on strategies to enhance communication skills at home as well as understanding the IEP.

Shannon Reda, M.A., Sp.Ed./TESOL,  is an ENL teacher at a School District in Nassau County. She did her undergraduate studies in psychology at Hofstra University, and completed her graduate studies in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Adelphi University. She currently holds a K-12 English to Speakers of Other Languages certificate, along with a Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6) certificate, and a Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) certificate. She has worked with English Language Learners from diverse backgrounds in kindergarten through eighth grade for the last 9 years in a School District on Long Island. Shannon has served as a mentor teacher, written a variety of grants, taught professional development courses on NWEA Instructional Ladders, ENL Strategies and Scaffolds, an Introduction to Nearpod, and presented at the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technology Conference. Shannon was honored in 2018 when she was the recipient of the Superintendent’s Outstanding Achievement Recognition (SOAR) Award for her contribution’s students and community.

Cancellation and CEUs

Cancellations are refundable if received 72 business hours prior to the event.  Please note: Registrants will receive a certificate of completion when the course

has been successfully completed.  If you wish to earn ASHA CEUs you must complete ASHA CEU forms and hand them in at the completion of the workshop.

Handouts

PowerPoint/Handout Presentations will be emailed to confirmed attendees, 72 hours prior to the workshop. There will be no internet access at the venue to download handouts. You will need to either print a copy or download the file to a computer, tablet or phone before the workshop.

Paper Handouts will NOT be available at the workshop.
