Functional communication training (FCT) is an intervention procedure in which practitioners address the underlying cause of a behavior (i.e., the function), and replace this behavior with some form of an appropriate communication skill. This new language behavior should meet the underlying function of the previous maladaptive behavior. In this workshop, the presenter will guide attendees through the essential steps to using FCT as a strategy for language – based intervention for speech-language pathologists, within the framework of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
Dana Battaglia, Ph.D., CCC-SLP received her Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from C.W. Post/Long Island University, and her Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from St. John’s University in Queens, New York. She holds a Ph.D. in the Speech-Language Hearing Sciences from the City University of New York. Dana is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped in New York State. She holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Dana has conducted presentations on autism and speech-language related topics at the local, state, national and international levels. Dana has worked in a variety of settings, including private and public schools, private practice, and Early Intervention. Currently, Dana is working as a Consultant for the Eden II/Genesis Program.
