More than 4.5% of American adults, and an even greater percentage of American youth, openly identify as LGBTQ+. Despite these numbers, practices from clinic paperwork to patient interactions often operate under the assumption that all patients identify as straight and cisgender. About one-sixth of LGBTQ+ adults say they have experienced healthcare discrimination, and well-intended providers can perpetrate discrimination unwittingly. Affirming practices and terminology within the LGBTQ+ community are constantly evolving. This interactive training for audiologists and speech pathologists will be an opportunity to get up to speed on current terminology relevant to the LGBTQ+ community, learn best practices for affirming care in clinic and school settings, and explore questions related to your work with LGBTQ+ patients. Every experience of discrimination or exclusion, whether intended or not, could mean one more person avoiding or disengaging from potentially life-changing care. We hope to provide you with concrete tools that you can implement in your practice immediately in order to create a secure and welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ patients.
Emilie K. Clark, LMSW, is a former social-justice educator and current licensed social worker in agency-based and private practice where she provides therapy to children, adolescents, adults, and families. Emilie graduated from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College as a participant in the National Child Traumatic Stress Network’s Child Trauma Program. Emilie has also trained with the Ackerman Institute for the Family’s Gender and Family Project in work with transgender and gender expansive youth and their families. She approaches her work form an anti-oppressive lens, understanding that interpersonal and systemic traumas greatly impact emotional health. In addition to her work as a therapist, Emilie has worked in LGBTQ+ program development and service delivery in a variety of settings including health clinics, community centers, schools, and residential care facilities.
Ashley L. Koenig, M.A., is a third-year doctoral student in the school-clinical-child psychology program at Pace University. She also holds a master’s in psychology from Pace University and formerly served as the clinic administrator of the McShane Center for Psychological Services. Ashley has founded the LGBTQ+ Affinity Group at Pace University’s Dyson college to create a collaborative community space for LGBTQ+ individuals who are currently in or have graduated from the masters and doctoral programs. Ashley has worked extensively with non-profit organizations, leading the development of LGBTQ+ inclusive and affirming services, policies, and public-relations campaigns. Her background as a stage manager and her bachelor’s degree in technical direction has lended itself to her community work as she developed and facilitated an intergenerational theatre program for the Staten Island Pride Center. Ashley also authored the glossary of terms for the published work, Creative Arts Therapies, and the LGBTQ Community.

3. List tools to create affirming/inclusive environments for their patients/students, including understanding the nuances of confidentiality and information-sharing pertaining to identity factors such as names and pronouns.
4. Show concrete suggestions regarding intake paperwork and patient records.
5. List tools for advocating for LGBTQ+ patients/students in their practice settings and for navigating difficult conversations with patients/students, caregivers (if working with minors), and colleagues.
