Overview

While the revised ASHA Code of Ethics has been in effect for more than a year, questions from members and certificate holders regarding how the Code affects their practices continue to arise. Audiologists and speech-language pathologists may face challenges in adhering to adopted codes of ethics and practicing in a manner consistent with the prescriptions contained therein. Defining what is ethical is often opaque. Most ethical situations are multi-faceted with countervailing considerations that must be weighed to reach the best possible outcome. Such an approach is timely as audiologists and speech-language pathologists confront contemporary ethical dilemmas including the potential impact of artificial intelligence, social media, and telepractice among other topics. Determining what course of conduct is appropriate in navigating the shifting professional terrain can be difficult. Participants will explore a variety of ethical issues analyzing how ASHA’s Code of Ethics may apply and will discuss ways to approach resolution.
