Overview

Supervisors recognize that the supervisory relationship is a partnership, based on trust and a spirit of collaboration. The research, evidence and essential knowledge and skills of effective supervision will be highlighted throughout the workshop. Participants will explore how supervisory style and communication influence the supervisory relationship. Stages of skill acquisition, current best practices and trends in clinical supervision including the role of critical thinking will be discussed. Ethical issues related to supervision as included in the new 2023 Code of Ethics will also be discussed. Participants will use ASHA’s 2016 self-assessment tool to rate their own competencies as supervisors and develop an individualized plan for personal growth in supervision.

Presenter

Melanie W. Hudson, M.A. CCC-SLP, is an ASHA Fellow, Distinguished Fellow of National Academies of Practice (NAP) and a Board-Certified Specialist in Child Language and Disorders. She served on ASHA’s Board of Directors (2016-2018), the Board of Ethics, and the Board of Special Interest Group Coordinators. Melanie’s recent publications include “Professional Issues in SpeechLanguage Pathology and Audiology”, 5th edition (Hudson & DeRuiter, 2019, Plural), chapter author for “The Clinical Education and Supervisory Process in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology,” (McCrea & Brasseur, Slack, Inc., 2019) and “National Speech-Language Pathology Exam Review and Study Guide,” (Lof & Johnson, Therapy Ed, 2021). She served as President of the Georgia Speech-Language and Hearing Association and on the Georgia Board of Examiners for SpeechLanguage Pathology and Audiology. Melanie was a candidate for ASHA’s President-elect for 2021, and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation. She is the former National Director of EBS Healthcare and resides in Williamsburg, VA.
