Director of Speech-Language Pathology
There is a high need for speech-language pathologists to conduct skilled assessment and provide intervention for children with pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders. This is expected to continue to increase as medical advances are made and premature births rise. However, there are not enough clinicians who feel confident in seeing this population or knowing their role as a speech-language pathologist on a feeding team. Research shows that negative experiences with feeding early in life can negatively affect a child’s relationship with food as he/she gets older. Additionally, a pediatric feeding disorder can develop at any stage of childhood and is not only seen in the medical setting. Therefore, it is crucial to have a foundation in this topic to not only feel confident with this population but also know how to advocate for these children to be seen by other specialists when needed. This workshop will provide an overview of the speech-language pathologist’s role with infants through adolescents. Feeding cases from the hospital, rehabilitation and home settings will be highlighted. The speaker will combine foundational knowledge with clinical experience to share lessons learned and how to provide patients/caregivers with the most functional feeding plans for their goals.
Nicole Scafura is a Speech-Language Pathologist who has over 4 years of experience working with the pediatric population. Nicole earned her Master of Science from New York Medical College in 2018. Since graduation, she has worked in a variety of settings in New York including home care, subacute rehabilitation, and acute care hospitals. Nicole has experience working with a variety of settings to aid families and patients along all aspects of their care during their medical journey. Nicole has provided dysphagia-based care to medically complex inpatients including those on oncology/hematology, infant/toddler and intensive care units (PICU, NICU). Nicole has served on a multidisciplinary team working with children who have craniofacial disorders, aerodigestive disorders, and velopharyngeal incompetence/insufficiency. She is trained in both modified barium swallow studies and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing studies for instrumental assessment. Nicole has a passion for educating others; she enjoys spreading her knowledge of pediatric dysphagia assessment and treatment interventions to students and professionals alike, using salient case studies from her experiences with individuals in inpatient and outpatient settings. She has presented at the state level for conferences in both New York and Pennsylvania. She has also presented at the national level for the ASHA convention. In the future, she hopes to continue lecturing at the university level to educate and prepare future clinicians in the foundations of pediatric feeding disorders.
